Blo’s Fifteenth Birthday Throwback – Iconic Hair & Makeup Moments From 2007

Blo's 15th Birthday

We’re celebrating our 15th Birthday this month by taking a trip down memory lane to see what was trending back in 2007. Yes, that’s right – we debuted as the original blow dry bar fifteen years ago. And while a lady never reveals her age, we think we’ve aged like a fine wine and just keep getting more fabulous

2007 was quite the year for pop culture. Apple launched the original iPhone, J.K. Rowling published the final Harry Potter novel, Knocked Up grossed more than $219 million worldwide, the Spice Girls launched their reunion tour, and Britney Spears had her infamous breakdown where she shaved her head at a Tarzana hair salon (it’s okay, things are finally looking up for the princess of pop now *sigh of relief*). With so much going on in the world of pop culture, it’s no surprise that the hair and makeup trends in ’07 were equally as dramatic. Without further ado, here are the most iconic hair and makeup moments from 2007.

Chunky Highlights In Vibrant Colours

Colourful Highlights

Seen on lots of early 2000s pop stars, such as Christina Aguilera and Avril Lavigne – every girl wanted to let her inner “rockstar” out with vibrant highlights. We all remember begging our parents for hair chalk or colored clip-ins so we could look as cool as Avril in the Girlfriend music video. Let’s be honest, if you were allowed to rock this look, you were undoubtedly the coolest kid in school. As seen during Fashion Week, vibrant pops of color are beginning to make a comeback, as designer Collina Strada used lots of pastel extensions in her collection – making all of our Sk8ter Boi dreams come true.

The Asymmetrical Bob

Side Swept Bob

When looking at this asymmetrical bob, there is only one thing that comes to mind – “The Karen.” This look is the ultimate “can I speak to your manager” haircut, and while it may have been “cool” at the time and trendy amongst pop stars – we hope it stays in 2007. While Rihanna looked like a sexy “good girl gone bad” in her Umbrella music video, her haircut does not “have our hearts,” sorry Riri.

Thin Over-plucked Eyebrows

Thin Eyebrows
It’s no secret that Gen Z love borrowing trade secrets from the early ’90s and ’00s. While there are some Y2K trends worthy of a resurgence, like dark lipstick and braided tendrils, there are others that make us cringe. As the saying goes, history often repeats itself, and thin, over-tweezed brows are making their way back. While beauty experts say that the current thin brow trend won’t be as sparse and pencil-like as it was in 2007 – we still advise putting the tweezers down.

Chunky Headbands

Chunky Headband

Premiering in 2007, Gossip Girl gave the world a sneak peek into the glamorous and dramatic lives of high school students on the Upper East Side. Famous for its attractive cast and impeccable costume design, there’s one item that holds a special place in fans’ hearts – Miss Blair Waldorf’s headbands. From the pilot episode onwards, Blair (Leighton Meester) set the tone as the Queen B of the Upper East Side. Meester’s character single-handedly spearheaded a headband movement, marking it as the must-have accessory of the late 2000s – because every Queen Bee needs her crown, xoxo gossip girl.

Full-Blown Smokey Eye with Smudged Liner

Dark, Bold Smokey Eye

The 2000s were no stranger to the smokey eye, notably for both a day and night look. But the real kicker was that this look was accompanied by a worrisome amount of dark, smudgy eyeliner that went all the way from the top to the bottom waterlines. Looking a bit raccoon-esque, chances are you wore a thick ring of black eyeliner to high school if you were a teen at any point between 2002-2013. Resembling it-girl coolness and rebellion, everyone from reality star Kim Kardashian to punk rock princess Avril Lavigne had bold, smudgy rims of eyeliner.

Side Bangs

Side Bangs

One question we have to ask is, who made the executive decision that we should all have side bangs in the 2000s? Really, who decided that a chunk of hair swept to the side was “in style”? While Jessica Alba, and Disney Star Ashley Tisdale were early adopters, we do have one thing to thank them for. Their side bang travesty provided inspiration for the current love of curtain bangs. Rather than having bangs swept to one side, parting them in the centre and framing the face has become the it-girl hairstyle of the year *chef’s kiss.*

Side Swept “Shaggy” Bangs

Long Side Bangs

Let’s hear it for the boys – 2007 hairstyles were harsh on them too. While we can’t single-handedly blame heartthrobs such as Chase Crawford and Zac Efron for this one, they are certainly guilty of making the “shaggy side bang” popular amongst younger crowds. I mean, look at them – they could pull off wearing a plastic bag as a hat with faces like that *cue love sigh.* While Bieber Fever didn’t happen until late 2009, we would definitely call “The Shag” the big brother to Bieber’s famous forward-sweeping “flow.”
